Samsung Launches Galaxy Fold with two displays

A Foldable Smartphone is finally a reality, courtesy Samsung. Even though there’s a hefty price tag to it (precisely $1980), it does come with a number of features that makes it cool and really exciting on paper.

Samsung has finally revealed its much hyped about foldable phone alongside the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S10 lineup and the new wearables. Called the Galaxy Fold, it will feature a 4.6-inch HD+ Super AMOLED display with a 840×1960 pixels resolution. When unfolded/opened, the same phone turns into a 7.3-inch tablet with a “Dynamic AMOLED display” and a 1536×2152 resolution.

Since it has two displays, the need to be powered well arises, which also brings in the possibility of using an extra battery. Thus, the device uses two batteries, which Samsung says will act as one. The total capacity of the battery is 4380mAH. The smartphone will come with 512Gb of UFS 3.0 storage, a “7nm processor” mated to 12GB of RAM. Those are some great specs to read.

The entire curiosity revolves around the foldable nature of the Galaxy Fold and the experience of using the same. The Korean company claims that they have engineered the hinge from ground up to offer a smooth experience of folding the phone. The experience was made seamless by reworking the OS software as the content would have to seamlessly move to the bigger screen. Samsung uses a feature called App Continuity to do so effectively.

With the help of a bigger screen, one can run up to three apps at a time with the Multi-Active Window feature. Apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, Google Maps have also been optimized for the device so that they fit its unfolded screen properly.

When it comes to the camera and imaging, the Galaxy Fold features 6 distinct cameras. The cover camera is a 10MP camera with an aperture of f/2.2. The rear triple cameras consist of a 16MP Ultra-Wide Camera with an f/2.2 aperture,  a 12MP Wide-angle Camera with Dual Pixel AF, OIS, and dual aperture of F1.5/F2.4. Lastly, there is a 12MP Telephoto Camera with PDAF, OIS, F/2.4 to offer 2X optical zoom. The front-facing dual cameras are a 10+8 megapixel combo with apertures of f/2.2 and f/1.9 respectively.

In terms of OS, the Galaxy Fold runs on Android 9 Pie.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold will be available starting April 26 for a retail price of $1980 (approx Rs 1,40,619). There is no word on India availability and pricing yet.
